Sabatier notes that short-term sacrifice now gives you the freedom to be financially independent in the future. However, this mindset about money did not fit with the way Sabatier viewed financial independence when he started in 2010. Sabatier, however, is moving away from his very thrifty approach by emphasizing the revenue side of the savings equation, since the money you can save from the budget is limited. Sabatier recommends trying to reduce this number as much as possible because it’s an easy way to have a big impact on your savings.

So, if you’re planning to spend $50,000 a year in retirement, you can leave when your investment and savings accounts are $1.25 million. Let’s say your FI number is $1.25 million, but you saved $100,000 and your expenses are $50,000 per year. To find your FIRE number, multiply your estimated annual retirement expense by 25.

Saving $1 million was my first goal, then I thought “retirement” was my second goal, even though my definition of retirement was that I would have enough money so I wouldn’t have to work anymore. I didn’t know how I would do it, and I didn’t even know if I could do it, but I spent the next five years doing everything I could to make it happen. I couldn’t imagine going back to the cubicle and spending the next 30+ years trying to make enough money to cover my rent and pay off my debt.

After years of work, he had only $2 left in his bank account, which was not enough to survive. Fast forward ten years, he became a best-selling author, Millennial Money blogger, and entrepreneur, detailing how he turned that $2 into over $1.25 million in 5 years.
